So the “Washington Football Team” sit atop of the NFC East after the first weekend, which is of course good. But what about the teams identity? Clearly Washington can’t go on being just called “Washington Football Team”. Despite what Snyder thinks, driven by his lack of charisma and soulless mountain of vanity.
What we see…
What Dan Snyder sees…
In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Snyder claimed that “We want our future name and brand to stand for something that unifies people of all backgrounds and to continue to be a source of pride for the next 100 years or more.”
But surely this is complete crap and anyone with at least some understanding of the Washington fans will feel their frustration of how the teams history has been torn apart and thrown in the trash. Surely Snyder should be getting people excited. Building enthusiasm of a relaunch, a completely new era for the team.
Surely millions of people won’t get behind an institution with a complete lack of identity like “”Washington Football Team” has. It goes against everything we have been brought up on and told our entire lives. Why in fact were the Washington team branded the Washington Redskins back in 1933, a years after they were the Boston Braves. Why build a brand of anything only to replace it with nothing?
The FANS need to decide the teams name and identify and they need to be allowed to decide it soon. Of course. I’m not saying the naming of the team should be hijacked by opposing fans and the team ends up being called Washington McBoatyFace, but the team needs something. Something which triggers an emotion, instead of almost complete blandness and black hole of identify. A retro kit surely doesn’t cut it.
Surely Snyder can come up with a system that allows genuine fans of the team to vote on a new name. The fans need to be given a voice and it’s the fans who should decide the future of Washington.
