San Diego Loyal Walk Off Following Homophobic Insult (They Were Winning 3-1)

San Diego Loyal stood up to their name after the team walked off the pitch following a slur targeted at one of their players from their opponents, Phoenix Rising. Loyal were winning the match 3-1 at the time and by forfeiting the match they will not miss out on the playoffs.

The homophobic slur was thought to be targeted at Collin Martin (pictured playing for former club Minnesota United) who came out as gay in 2018.

Loyal also forfeited a match against LA Galaxy II last week after an alleged racial slur was aimed at midfielder Elijah Martin. The player accused of making the comment has since been let go by Galaxy.

A statement from the USL Championship stated…”Foul and abusive language of any type has absolutely no place in our society and will not be tolerated in USL matches,”
